San Antonio, USA.
As San Antonio has grown, the answer to our transit problems has been more roads. That’s not good enough anymore. We need rail transit.
San Antonians for Rail Transit (SART) is a group dedicated to promoting safe, effective rail options at every level for San Antonio. In a city of over a million, even the best-managed bus system is simply not sufficient. Modern transit requires a multi-modal approach, maximizing the benefits of each form of transit.

Dizzyingly complicated flyovers, extra lanes, complex bypasses. And yet, every year the traffic gets worse and our roads get deadlier and deadlier. We spend more and more hours in our cars but we don’t seem to get anywhere fast. Gas prices continue to skyrocket, making even idling in traffic an expensive proposition.
Our leaders seem to think the problem is, “How do we move more cars through our city?” But the real question should be, “How do we have fewer cars on the roads?” Ultimately, there is only one answer: mass transit.
That San Antonio is the largest city in the United States without ANY rail-based mass transit should be an embarrassment. That San Antonio, the seventh largest city in America has no metro, light rail, streetcars, tramways, trolleybuses, or even people movers should be scandalous.
Rail is a crucial element in making American cities safer, more humane, more livable and more pleasurable. Those who are marginalized in our society – by age, disability, or economic status – deserve inclusion and integration.
Rail, like city buses, should be publicly owned and run as a utility. It should integrate with a “complete streets” approach and encourage transit-oriented development.
Climate change is real, human-driven and must be combated through weaning our society from its dependence on fossil fuels, including car culture. Rail transit helps in that fight.
Finally, rail transit is a source of pleasure and joy. We celebrate the landscapes, relationships and experiences that come from rail transit and we seek to share it with the world.
But a dues-paying membership gives you a vote and a voice in our future. You’ll be able to vote on official matters, serve on committees, and run for leadership positions.
Furthermore, your dues directly fund the critical advocacy needed to make real transit choice in San Antonio a reality.
