SART (www.railforsanantonio.com) is a 501(c)4 membership-driven political action nonprofit organization dedicated to fighting for rail transit in all its forms for Greater San Antonio.
Everyone is welcome to attend any of our social or business meetings or other events. If you choose to become a member , you can vote on official group matters and join committees. You also give financial and moral support to our vital work.
To become a member of SART, you need to live within the Great San Antonio region (defined as Bexar County and all adjacent counties).
As a political organization, we publicly endorse policies and candidates. As such, however, membership and donations are NOT tax deductible.
If do not live in Greater SA and wish to support our work, please donate.
We want to bring our goals to reality. Our committees enable members to contribute to that effort by putting their skills to work. If you want to be a part, email us!
The Public Affairs committee is the outreach arm of SART. Committee members engage with our members and followers through social media-Facebook, Instagram, Bluesky, X, and Reddit. Learn more about our plan for Central Texas regional rail.
The Membership committee works to bring like-minded people into our movement. They plan our social and business meetings and dialogue with other community organizations to coordinate our efforts.
Our movement gains direction through information. Gathering and presenting that information is the job of the Research committee. Research documents are presented on our website and in our blog. They are also a source of information for our social media posts.

The creation of a commuter light rail on the I-35 corridor connecting San Antonio to Austin and the cities in between. We advocate for a cessation of plans to expand I-35 and instead divert those funds in purchase of the San Antonio-Austin rail corridor and the eventual creation of high-speed rail connections.

The construction of elevated street crossings throughout the urban space. No urban traffic should ever have to stop for a train to pass. We also advocate for rail as a safer means of transit than private vehicle.
The development of an effective intra-city rail system designed not only for tourists but also commuters, students, and residents.
We want San Antonio to become a regional hub for rail transit. Amtrak should increase its westbound Texas Eagle trains, and all Sunset Limited trains to daily service. It should restore direct connection between San Antonio and Oklahoma City, and eventually Wichita, Kansas, via an expanded Heartland Flyer. The Sunset Limited should be restored to its previous route, giving San Antonians direct rail links to Mobile, Jacksonville, and Orlando.
Amtrak should create regional weekend excursion rail connections to Marfa, TX, Big Bend National Park (via Alpine, TX), San Marcos, and other appropriate destinations. Locally, the Missions Express would link downtown, the San Antonio Missions National Park, the Riverwalk Mission Reach, and the San Antonio Railroad Heritage Museum in Elmendorf.
High speed rail—starting with the Texas Triangle. More regional lines, such as our San Antonio to Austin Staged Approach. Commuter rail to suburbs around San Antonio such as Boerne, New Braunfels, and Elemendorf. We are excited for new ideas that push the boundaries of rail in our city and do not limit our vision of the future to the above. These are the first steps.
